US 389

U.S. Route 389 or U.S. Highway 389 (US 389) is a U.S. Highway in the western United States that is an auxiliary route of U.S. Route 89 (US 89). It travels in the northwest-southeast direction instead of just north-south, which most odd-numbered highways goes. Considerably, its northwestern terminus is at Interstate 80 (I-80) in downtown Reno, Nevada and its southeastern terminus is at U.S. Route 491 (US 491) near Gallup, New Mexico. US 389 travels through the U.S. states of Nevada, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.

US 389 is nicknamed "The Terrestrial Highway of the West" because wide open spaces are involved along the road. In Nevada, the road is called the Terrestrial Highway because it goes through the towns of Extraterrestrial City and Terrestrial City. Near the Utah-Nevada state line in the Highway City area, US 389 connects through the twin cities of Intertropolis and Routeville as a four-lane divided highway known as Nanospore Avenue.

According to the character Interstate 47, one of the news reporters from KHWY News, it is the least used main public road in Highway City and the safest highway, with around 500 vehicles passing by per day (70 to 80 vehicles per hour) as mentioned in the Intertropolis & Routeville episode "The Sweet Street". The portion in Routeville is much safer, while the portion in Intertropolis is mild, where it runs concurrent with US 47 southwest of Downtown Intertropolis and has three intersections and four interchanges. In Routeville, US 389 has no intersections as it is the lonely southernmost road, but it does has three interchanges with expressways.
